The mountain's story
Pumori stands on the Nepal–China border in the Mahalangur Himal, just eight kilometres west of Everest. Its name, given by George Mallory, means 'the Mountain Daughter' in the Sherpa language (pumo for young girl or daughter, ri for mountain), and climbers sometimes call it Everest's Daughter. Mallory also called it Clare Peak, after his own daughter.[2]
Gerhard Lenser of a German–Swiss expedition made the first ascent on 17 May 1962. At its foot sits Kala Patthar, a brown bump below the south face that many trekkers climb for the most accessible close view of Everest.[3][2]
