The mountain's story
Nuptse is Tibetan for 'west peak': it is the western segment of the Lhotse–Nuptse massif, two kilometres southwest of Everest in the Khumbu region of the Mahalangur Himal. Its main summit, Nuptse I, reaches 7,861 metres.[2]
From much of the valley below, Nuptse's long crest is what you actually see. It blocks Everest's summit from much of the surrounding region. Dennis Davis and Sherpa Tashi made the first ascent on 16 May 1961. After a pause of almost twenty years, climbers returned to put up important routes on its west, south and north faces.[3][2]
