The mountain's story
Known in Nepali as Sagarmatha, in Sherpa as Chomolangma and in Tibetan as Qomolangma, Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level. It rises in the Mahalangur Himal, and its summit marks part of the border between Nepal and China. A joint survey by Nepalese and Chinese authorities in 2020 set its height at 8,848.86 metres.[2][1]
British surveyors first catalogued it as Peak XV. Surveyor General Andrew Waugh proposed naming it after his predecessor, George Everest, and the Royal Geographical Society adopted the name in 1865. On 29 May 1953, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary of John Hunt's expedition made the first documented ascent, by the South Col route. From much of the Khumbu the summit hides behind Nuptse, which is why trekkers climb Kala Patthar for a clear look.[3][2]
