The mountain's story
Dhaulagiri I is the seventh-highest mountain in the world at 8,167 metres, and the highest mountain that lies entirely within the borders of a single country. Its name comes from Sanskrit: dhawala, dazzling or white, and giri, mountain.[2]
It is the highest point of the Gandaki river basin. Thirty-four kilometres to the east stands Annapurna I, and between the two the Kali Gandaki river has cut what is described as the world's deepest gorge. A Swiss–Austrian–Nepali expedition made the first ascent on 13 May 1960. It is one of the three eight-thousanders that can be seen from Pokhara and from the Sarangkot ridge above it.[3][4][2]
